MONSTER MAKERS

WHO WOULD EVER HAVE THOUGHT THAT A SCRIBBLY DRAWING STUCK UP ON A WALL WITH BLU-TAK, COULD LEAD TO FIVE OF THE MADDEST BOOKS I’VE WRITTEN.

It all began when Jacob, my eldest son, then aged about eight or nine, was getting madly into drawing monsters. He got his little brother, Alex, (then about five) into it as well and between them they created THE TAURS and THE MITES.

The TAURS were big and scary and the MITES were small and scary. Some were good, some were bad, some could be goo d or bad, depending on their mood, what you’d fed them, the day of the week, their star sign, the fit of their pants… much like people really.

Just for fun at bedtime, I started writing a story about Jack and Lewis (but really Jacob and Alex) and their drawings and what happened when their eccentric aunt brought home some magic Merrion’s Mead, which had the power to bring dreams to life.

When the mead gets spilt on Jack and Lewis’s drawings of Electrotaur and Slashermite, something insane happens in the middle of the night.

I mean… what would YOU do if you woke up to find an 8ft buzzing electricity monster and a 4ft blade-fingered beast sharing your bedroom?

THE MONSTER MAKERS SERIES
Scholastic

Jack & Lewis love drawing monsters… but they don’t expect them to come to life…

Electrataur and Slashermite
Nobody is more surprised than Jack and Lewis when their aunt’s gift of 'magic' Merrion’s Mead brings their monster drawings to life. But where do you hide a small slashing creature with knife blades for fingers and an 8ft buzzing electricity beast?

Stinkermite
Jack and Lewis have all their monsters under control, living in the underground world of Tauronia, which they drew themselves and brought to life with magic Merrion’s Mead. Until annoying cousin Timmy shows up, guffing for Britain. And Stinkermite escapes in a supermarket…

Bashertaur
Perfect pupil Dahlia Dawkins thinks Jack and Lewis should 'play nicely'. And she’s making all the teachers agree and stop any gory monster games in the playground. But Dahlia is not what she seems, and when she gets a hold of some magic Merrion’s Mead she creates her own monster and starts controlling minds…

Spacemite
An invasion of monsters in Aunt Thea’s back garden, a strange light shining into the sky from the Gateway to Tauronia, a half dead bully and a dangerous escaped assassin. It’s all in a day’s work for Jack and Lewis. But when the alien hunters and the local paper and the BBC come calling, there’s big trouble…

Rockataur
Oh no! Aunt Thea's been kidnapped and all the magic Merrion's mead has been stolen so Jack and Lewis can't get help from their monsters when they need it most. But Ninjataur is still in the overworld, having misbehaved and not gone home as he was told. Can he help to save Aunt Thea? And if not, is this the end of the Taurs and the Mites?
